the curiousity within

18 Apr 2010In building your winning team to play a game or build a business, don’t be afraid to pick people who are stronger, faster, smarter, better organized, braver, more ambitious, funnier or more pleasant than you are. Ask your best people for recommendations. Think about the spirit on the best teams you were ever on and how your teammates cooperated in reaching a common goal. Think about the dignity and respect your teammates showed to one another. Think about how you were able to rebound from losses to play and win again.
You want your team to be built on excellence. You want your team built with members of merit and characÂter. Resist those who propose membership based upon patronage. Excellence is excellence and is not subject to conditions of race, color, creed, national origin, etc. If people are the best-qualified to fulfill the team’s mission, then that’s what they are. If they are not, they are not.
Hire Slowly
Hiring, which is giving people money, is a lot easier than firing, which is taking money away from them. Hire slowly.
You want to hire people with the right qualifications for the right job. You want workers who will comfortably coÂexist with present staff. Ideally, you want new workers to be smart and hard working. They should not need a lot of hand holding and can either hit the ground running or learn quickly.
You want front counter staff to be pleasant and accomÂmodating. You want sales people who are knowledgeable and ambitious. You want customer service employees who are problem solvers and who follow up. You want execuÂtives with good communication skills who will get up from behind their desks and lead.
Frequently, your best new hires will come from the recÂommendations of existing employees and from your own networking.
If you want the best, you have to be the best yourself. When you have acquired a winning staff, you want to retain them by offering competitive salaries, benefits and perks.
Between the first and second interviews, ask prospecÂtive employees to read The Action Principles®. What do you think about what they think?
