Can Americans be Really THAT Stupid?

As of yesterday, Sep 12 ‘08, Gallup and Rasmussen found out that McCain leads Obama, 48% to 45%.
Is this for real?
I mean, if the polls were accurate, we have a country, as great a country as the US — to whom the whole world affairs depend on — that consists mostly of ignorant people?
